Patio Cover Installation

Fence Max Texas designs and builds custom patio covers for Dallas–Fort Worth homes, from simple solid-roof covers to elaborate custom structures, lattice designs and combination covers that shade part of the patio while leaving the rest open to the sky.

If you're looking to enhance the look and functionality of your backyard while adding value to your home, you've come to the right place. Our Dallas patio cover builders offer innovative, eye-pleasing designs to help transform your house into the home you imagined.

Our designs have one thing in common: they are focused on delivering a structure that makes your home a more relaxing and enjoyable place to live. Whether you want a simple patio cover, an elaborate custom-designed cover or a beautiful multi-use sunroom, our builders can help.

Selecting a patio cover design is a personal choice. The patio might be for general use, a utility area for a grill and a table, an entertaining space, a hobby area, or an all-weather living area for you, your family and your pets. The design also depends on the decor and shape of the structure supporting it. A solid patio cover is a good choice if you want to block out sun and rain; an alternative is to cover part of the patio with a solid roof and the other half with a lattice design. A pergola is another option — the angled slats give an airy feeling while still blocking sun to provide comfortable shade.

Why it works here

Built for North Texas

Sun and rain protection

A solid roof turns a patio that is unusable from June through September into an everyday room.

Designed to the house

Roof pitch, fascia and column detail are matched to the existing structure so the cover looks original to the home.

Combination layouts

Solid over the dining area, lattice over the grill or the planting bed — the cover does not have to be all one thing.

Ready for what comes next

Fans, lighting, TVs and outdoor kitchens are much easier when they are planned into the structure from the start.

Materials & options

  • Cedar framing and columns
  • Solid shingle or metal roofing
  • Lattice and open-slat sections
  • Tongue-and-groove ceilings
  • Brick or stone column wraps
  • Gutters and downspouts
  • Ceiling fans and lighting
  • Stain and paint finishes

What affects cost

  • Covered square footage
  • Solid roof vs. lattice vs. combination
  • Roofing material and pitch
  • Attached vs. freestanding
  • Column type and any masonry wraps
  • Ceiling finish (open framing vs. tongue-and-groove)
  • Gutters and drainage work
  • Electrical: fans, lighting, outlets
  • Any new or extended concrete

Texas weather

A patio cover in North Texas has to shed heavy spring rain, survive hail and high wind, and carry the heat load of a full Texas summer. Roof pitch, attachment to the house, and where the water goes when it comes off the roof are the details that matter most. A cover that dumps rainwater against the foundation causes a much more expensive problem than it solved.

Maintenance

Clear gutters and roof valleys before storm season, check the flashing where the cover meets the house each year, and re-stain exposed cedar every two to four years. Inspect after any significant hail event.

FAQ

Common questions

Solid cover or pergola?
Choose a solid cover if you want rain protection and full shade, and a pergola if you want an open, airy structure with dappled light. Many of our projects combine both.
Will a patio cover make the house darker?
It can reduce light into rooms directly behind it. Roof pitch, depth and a lighter ceiling finish all help, and skylights are an option where light matters.
Can you extend my patio slab too?
Yes. Patio extensions are commonly done together with the cover so the finished area is sized to the furniture you actually want out there.
Do patio covers need permits?
In most North Texas cities, yes, and HOA approval is usually required as well. We will tell you what applies to your address.
Can I add an outdoor kitchen later?
You can, but tell us now. Running gas, water and electrical during construction is far less expensive than opening things up afterward.
How does the cover attach to my roof?
Typically at a ledger with proper flashing, tied into the existing framing. The flashing detail is what prevents leaks, so it is not something to shortcut.
