Attached Patio Cover Installation
An attached patio cover ties into the house at a ledger and is supported on columns at the outer edge, extending the roofline over your patio. Fence Max Texas builds attached covers across Dallas–Fort Worth with flashing detailed to keep water out of the wall.
An attached cover is the most common patio cover we build, because it reads as part of the house rather than as a separate structure in the yard.
The critical detail is the connection. A ledger has to be attached into structure, flashed properly and integrated with the existing roof so water is directed away rather than into the wall.
Roof pitch and depth also affect how much light reaches the rooms behind the cover, which is worth thinking about before finalizing the design.

Texas weather
Where the cover meets the house is where leaks start. Correct flashing and a roof pitch that sheds North Texas downpours are what separate a cover that lasts from one that damages the wall behind it. Where the water goes after it leaves the roof matters just as much.
Maintenance
Check flashing and gutters annually and after hail. Clear valleys before storm season and re-stain exposed cedar on a two-to-four-year cycle.
FAQ
Common questions
- Will an attached cover darken my house?
- It can reduce daylight into rooms directly behind it. A steeper pitch, shallower depth, lighter ceiling finish or skylights all help.
- Can it match my existing roof?
- Yes. Matching roofing material, pitch and fascia detail is standard practice so the cover reads as original to the home.
- Will it leak where it meets the house?
- Not when the ledger is flashed and integrated correctly. That detail is the most important part of the build.
- Can gutters be added?
- Yes, and on most attached covers they should be, so runoff is directed away from the foundation.
- Is a permit required?
- In most North Texas cities, yes, along with HOA approval.
