Horizontal Fence Installation

Horizontal fencing runs the boards sideways for a clean, modern line that suits contemporary North Texas architecture. Fence Max Texas builds horizontal cedar fences with tight or spaced board layouts, concealed fasteners and posts spaced for the span.

Horizontal fencing has become the default look for contemporary homes, and it changes more than the direction of the boards. Spans, post spacing and board selection all have to be handled differently than a vertical fence.

Because horizontal boards span between posts without vertical support in the middle, board quality and post spacing determine whether the fence stays straight. We specify both for the run rather than defaulting to standard spacing.

The layout can be tight for full privacy, or intentionally spaced to create a slatted screen that filters light — a look that works particularly well as a courtyard screen or a pool-area divider.

Texas weather

Horizontal boards hold water on their top edge in a way vertical pickets do not, so board selection and finish matter more. Correct post spacing prevents the sag that shows up in the middle of long horizontal spans.

Maintenance

Keep the finish current — the top edge of each board is the first place water gets in. Check for cupping after the first summer and re-fasten anything that has moved.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a horizontal fence more expensive?
Usually somewhat, because it needs higher-grade boards, closer post spacing and more careful fastening than a vertical fence of the same height.
Will horizontal boards sag?
Not when post spacing is designed for the board span. Sag is a symptom of posts set too far apart for the material used.
Can horizontal fencing be fully private?
Yes. Tight-laid boards give complete privacy; spaced layouts are chosen when you want a screen rather than a wall.
Does it work on a sloped yard?
It requires more planning than a vertical fence, because the horizontal lines make any grade change very visible. Stepping the panels is usually the cleanest solution.
What wood is used?
Cedar, for the same rot and insect resistance that makes it the right choice for vertical fencing here.
