Driveway Gate Installation

Fence Max Texas designs, manufactures and installs driveway gates across Dallas–Fort Worth in wood, iron or a combination of both. Gates are built as swing or slide configurations, sized to the driveway, and can be manual or fitted with an automatic opener.

A driveway gate has to do three things at once: control access, look like it belongs to the house, and move reliably thousands of times. Getting all three requires the gate, the posts and the driveway conditions to be considered together.

We build driveway gates as single or double swing gates, or as slide gates where the driveway slopes or there is no room to swing. Wood gates on steel frames give the warmth of cedar with the structure needed for the span.

Gates can be manual from day one and automated later, but the frame and posts should be specified for automation up front if it is a possibility.

Texas weather

Driveway gate posts carry a lot of weight in soil that moves seasonally. Footing depth and diameter are engineered for that, not standardized. Sloping driveways also change what is possible: a swing gate needs clearance over the drive surface through its whole arc.

Maintenance

Grease hinges or clean the track annually, keep debris out of the swing path, and check post plumb after the first wet-dry cycle.

FAQ

Common questions

How wide should a driveway gate be?
The gate is sized to the driveway opening and how vehicles approach it. Tight street approaches sometimes call for a wider opening than the driveway itself.
Can a driveway gate be added to an existing fence?
Yes, though the gate posts are almost always new since they carry far more load than fence line posts.
Manual or automatic?
Manual costs less and is fine for a gate that is rarely closed. If it will be used daily, automation is worth it — and either way the gate should be built to accept an opener.
What about a pedestrian gate?
A separate walk gate beside the drive is very common and keeps the large gate from cycling for foot traffic.
How is the driveway slope handled?
Slope determines whether a swing gate can clear the drive surface. Where it cannot, a slide gate is the answer.
