Board-on-Board Fence Installation

Board-on-board fencing overlaps every picket over the one beside it, eliminating the gaps that open when wood shrinks. Fence Max Texas builds board-on-board cedar fences across Dallas–Fort Worth with top cap, arches, corbels, flat columns and matching gates.

Board-on-board is the construction method behind most of the fences in our gallery, and it is what people usually mean when they say they want a fence that looks custom.

Instead of setting pickets side by side, each board overlaps its neighbor by an inch or more. That overlap means the fence stays solid year-round, and it gives the surface a layered shadow line that flat fences don't have.

Because the structure is already stronger and heavier, board-on-board fences are the natural home for the detailing we build most often: top cap and double trim, arched or scalloped sections, corbels and flat decorative columns.

Materials & options

  • Overlapping cedar pickets
  • Top cap with single or double trim
  • Arched and pediment tops
  • Corbels and flat columns
  • Steel or cedar posts
  • Pressure-treated rot board

What affects cost

  • Linear footage and height
  • Amount of overlap specified
  • Cap, trim and arch detailing
  • Corbels and decorative columns
  • Post material
  • Gates and demolition

Texas weather

The overlap is specifically an answer to the North Texas humidity swing. When boards shrink in a dry summer, the overlap absorbs the movement and the fence stays closed.

Maintenance

Stain on a two-to-four-year cycle. Because there is more exposed wood surface than a flat fence, keeping a good finish on it pays off more.

FAQ

Common questions

Is board-on-board worth the extra cost?
If privacy or appearance matters, yes. It uses roughly 40–50% more picket material than a side-by-side fence, and it is the reason the fence still looks closed in August.
Does it look the same from both sides?
Close to it. That is a real advantage where a neighbor shares the fence or the HOA has an opinion about which way the finished side faces.
Can arches and columns be added?
Yes. Arched sections, pediment gate tops, corbels and flat columns are all detailing we build regularly on board-on-board fences.
How is it different from shadow-box fencing?
Shadow-box alternates boards on opposite sides of the rail and lets air and some light through. Board-on-board overlaps on the same side and blocks the view completely.
Is it heavier on the posts?
Yes, which is why post material and setting depth are specified for the actual fence being built rather than a standard.
