Custom Pergola Design & Construction
Fence Max Texas designs and builds custom cedar pergolas for Dallas–Fort Worth homes. Post size, beam depth, rafter spacing and overhang are specified for your space, giving controlled shade over a patio, pool deck or outdoor kitchen.
A pergola is a proportion problem before it is a construction problem. Undersized posts and shallow beams are what make a structure look like a kit; sizing them to the span and to the house is what makes it look built.
We design pergolas as attached structures over an existing patio or as freestanding destinations in the yard, in cedar, with rafter spacing chosen for the amount of shade you actually want.
Lighting, fans and heaters are far easier when they are planned into the beam layout, so bring them up during design.

Texas weather
Wind uplift is the design load that matters for an open structure in North Texas. Footings, post bases and beam connections handle it. Sun determines rafter spacing and how quickly an unstained pergola turns silver.
Maintenance
Re-stain every two to four years, keep debris out of rafter joints, inspect post bases annually and re-tighten hardware after the first season.
FAQ
Common questions
- How much shade does a pergola provide?
- It is a design decision. Tighter rafter spacing or an added lattice layer deepens the shade; wider spacing keeps it airy.
- Attached or freestanding?
- Attached works over an existing patio adjacent to the house; freestanding lets you place the structure wherever the yard works best.
- Can a pergola be added over an existing deck?
- Often, yes, but the deck framing has to be able to carry the posts. That is checked before design is finalized.
- Will it protect from rain?
- No. If you want rain protection, build a solid patio cover, or combine a solid section with an open pergola section.
- Do pergolas need permits?
- Most North Texas cities require a permit for a permanent structure, and HOAs generally require approval.
