Before meeting with any builder, you should be prepared to discuss these items:

  • The purpose and exact location of the fence.
  • The design features you want, including the height, style and material.
  • Your approximate budget.
  • Your desired completion date.

Questions to ask when interviewing a fence contractor:

  • Check to see if the company holds liability and worker’s compensation insurance. The contractor should be able to supply you with the proper forms.
  • Request a list of references. Former customers are an excellent source of information. Call these individuals and ask if they were pleased with the contractors work.
  • If you reside in a subdivision you will most likely need approval from your your Homeowner’s Association prior to installation to meet the requirements of your HOA Declarations and Restrictive Covenants.
  • Your county may require a permit to install a fence. Contact local city ordinance department for fence installation regulations.
  • Be prepared for an on-site visit. To properly evaluate your needs a good fence contractor should inspect the installation site personally. Beware of a contractor that takes all your information over the phone.
  • Request a sample of the products to be used. Make sure they are what you are expecting.
  • Ask about warranties. Material warranties are usually provided by the Manufacturer and workmanship is guaranteed by the contractor. The warranty terms will vary from product to product, so be sure to read and understand the fine print.
  • Get a cost estimate and make sure it includes all the services and products you have requested.

If reviewing cost estimates from different contractors, it is critical to make sure that they are based on the exact same service and quality of products. Be wary of a contractor who offers an unrealistically low price, They may plan to cut corners, or they may not fully understand your project.
Be sure to get everything in writing. The estimate and/or contract should be completely explained in a written format and signed by the contractor.
Ask questions. You should feel free to ask for details about the company, the work crew, the installation and the fence products themselves. A professional contractor knows his reputation depends on your satisfaction, both during and after installation.
